The pooja room should never ever be made in the bedroom.
The pooja room should not be made above electrical appliances or gas stoves.
The pooja room should not should not share a wall with the toilet of the house.
The pooja room should not be built opposite a bathroom or toilet.
The pooja room should be neat and clean. Avoid dirt or clutter therein and keep it fragrant.
The ground floor is the ideal location for a pooja room.

प्राची Prachi / Purva (East) , प्रतीची Pratichi / Paschim (West) , उदीची Udichi / Uttar (North), अवाचि Avachi / Dakshin (South), ईशान Ishanya (North-East), अग्नि Agneya (South-East), नैऋत्य Nairutya (South-West), वायु Vayavya (North-West), ऊर्ध्व Urdhwa/ Akash (Skywards), अधरस्त Adharastha/ Patal (Downwards)

These are a few key aspects to be kept in mind:
1) The deity or photograph should be positioned in such a way that you face east while praying towards it. West is the second best location.
2) The lamp or diya can be placed in the south east corner.
3) Photographs (pictures) of dead people or ancestors should not be kept in the prayer room.
4) This room should be strictly used for prayer and meditation.
5) Due to shortage of space, some people keep a small wall-mounted temple in the bedroom or kitchen. A curtain should be placed in front of it when it is not in use.
